Cash for Mosquitoes in Barangay Addition Hills

BY TREISHA C. ROVERO

In a striking response to the rising tide of dengue cases in the Philippines, a barangay in Mandaluyong City has launched an unconventional campaign to curb the spread of the mosquito-borne disease. Barangay Addition Hills has introduced a cash incentive program, rewarding residents for capturing or killing mosquitoes and their larvae. This initiative, both creative and pragmatic, underscores the urgency of addressing a public health crisis that has intensified since the start of 2025.

Barangay officials set up a designated aquarium to collect and dispose of the mosquitoes and larvae turned in by residents. According to them, the program offers one peso for every five mosquitoes caught. This approach not only incentivizes action but also fosters a collective sense of responsibility in tackling a shared threat. By directly engaging residents, Barangay Addition Hills is turning a public health challenge into an opportunity for civic involvement.

Concurrently, the Department of Health continues to advocate for its 5S strategy to combat dengue: searching for and eliminating mosquito breeding sites, protecting oneself from bites, seeking early medical advice, supporting targeted fogging in high-risk areas, and maintaining proper hydration to manage symptoms. These guidelines remain a cornerstone of dengue prevention, particularly during the rainy season when mosquito populations spike.

While a peso-per-mosquito reward may seem small, its impact lies in mobilizing a community to act as one. In the fight against dengue, every mosquito caught is a step toward a safer, healthier neighborhood.
