President Bongbong Marcos

Is set to deliver his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, June 25, 2022. His highly anticipated speech is expected to focus on major topics like COVID-19 response, curbing inflation, return to face-to-face-classes, and addressing food security concerns.

Delivering the SONA is a constitutionally-mandated presidential obligation, to be done at the opening of Congress’ regular session. Delivered before a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives, the speech serves as a way for the chief executive to report on the status of the country, announce the government’s agenda for the coming year, and propose to Congress certain legislative measures.

The day of the SONA is also traditionally a day for progressive groups to air their grievances through the so-called People’s SONA. Among the issues expected to be raised by protesters today are the need to check inflation, ensuring safety with the resumption of face-to-face classes, protecting national sovereignty, and preventing historical revisionism.
