Queen Elizabeth II

London Bridge is down.

The Buckingham Palace has released a statement announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, September 8, 2022.

According to the statement posted at the gates of the palace, "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

She was 96.

Britain's longest serving monarch had reigned for 70 years and 127 days, having taken the throne on February 6, 1952 at the age of 25. Prince Charles immediately ascends the throne and is now the King of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth countries.

She was the 2nd longest reigning monarch in history, second to King Louis XIV of France who served for 72 years and 110 days.
